Electrical Installation Level 2

Duration: ten (10) months

Location: Caribbean Military Technical Training Institute

Overview

This programme prepares students with the requisite entry level knowledge and manipulative skills for employment in the electrical industry such as electrical appliance shops, utility companies, and electrical construction and maintenance companies. The programme combines theory with laboratory activities as an effective means of developing the skills essential to the electrical trade.

The trainees begin with the fundamentals of electricity and wiring of simple circuits and machines, then progresses to residential wiring, three phase alternating current power, and introduction to motor controls. Safety is stressed as an integral part of each shop task. Emphasis is placed on wiring in accordance with the provisions contained in the Jamaica Standard 21, 1992.

  • Check/identify/isolate/rectify malfunctioning electrical machinery appliance and fixtures

Entry Requirement

NVQ-J Level 1 – Electrical Installation or successful completion of the HEART NSTA Trust Diagnostic Test or at least one (1) CSEC or GCE subject

Qualification Gained

NVQ-J Level 2 Certificate in Electrical Installation. The NVQ-J Certification is recognized in all CARICOM and Commonwealth countries.

Electrical Installation Level 3

Duration: eight (8) months

Location: Caribbean Military Technical Training Institute

Overview

This course prepares students for supervisory roles in the electrical industry. The course combines theory with laboratory activities. Trainees begin with fundamental skills including leadership, customer service, basic management, problem solving and work place safety. They are then exposed to the coordination and installation of detailed residential, commercial and industrial wiring; industrial machines, components and systems to include motor controls. Safety is stressed as an integral part of each task. Emphasis is placed on wiring in accordance with the provisions contained in the Jamaica Standard 21, 1992 and other relevant codes.

Objectives

  • Introduction to management and supervision
  • Installation of communication cables
  • Coordinate the installation of electrical wiring support system infrastructure, electrical cable and accessories
  • Install and maintain electronic and electrical equipment and distribution circuits
  • Diagnose and repair faults in electrical and electronic equipment and systems
  • Use industrial instrumentation measuring devices
  • Plan for wiring and installation of electrical/electronic machinery appliances
  • Perform testing and inspection of electrical installations
  • Coordinate and manage commissioning processes
  • Coordinate the installation of electrical equipment, ancillary apparatus and secondary wiring

Entry Requirement

NVQ-J Level 2 Certificate in Electrical Installation

Qualification Gained

  • NVQ-J Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation. The NVQ-J Certification is recognized in all CARICOM and Commonwealth countries.
